Graves of Polish internees

Following the German aggression against Poland on 1 September 1939 and the attack by the USSR on 17 September 1939, thousands of Poles, both civilians and soldiers, crossed the Hungarian border. Despite the difficult international situation and Hungary's affiliation with the Axis powers, the Hungarians were very sympathetic and provided assistance to the Polish refugees. The Poles were cared for - both by the Hungarian state and by Polish organisations operating in Hungary. The internees were placed in numerous military and civilian camps.
The number of Polish internees in the initial period of the exile is estimated at about 140,000, including about 33,000 privates and officers. Over time, the number of refugees, mainly military, decreased as a result of the evacuation campaign organised by the Poles to France and the Middle East to Polish military units being formed there.
In the local cemetery in Nagycenk there are two graves of interned State Police officers: sergeant Filip Presch and sergeant Stanislaw Pakuła. The graves are located close to each other, in the left sector (sector "A"), walking from the main entrance at Széchenyi tér, and in front of the Széchenyi family mausoleum.
On the grave of F. Presch (sector A, row 11, grave No. 5) there is a concrete tombstone with a metal cross with a figure of the crucified Christ and a metal inscription plaque, very illegible now: "Ś.P. / Filip Presch / ... st. [sergeant] of the State Police / born / [27.09.] 1890 in Kob[ylnica] / died 6.06.[...] / in [...]"
On the grave of S. Pakula (sector A, row 14, grave no. 8) stands a stone monument, topped by a metal cross with a figure of the crucified Christ, with an engraved epitaph inscription: "Ś.P. / Stanisław Pakula / st. sergeant of the State Police / born on 25 III [or: IV] 1886 Golkówek / district Brzeziny died on 15 V 1941 / in the Polish internment camp / in Kiscenk / decorated with the Cross of Independence / Cross of Merit with Swords / Honour to His Memory".
Data concerning the deceased were supplemented on the basis of archival documents.
