Graves of Polish refugees from 1939 in the local cemetery

An internment camp for Polish officers was located in Roşiori de Vede. Initially, it held 259 junior officers and 43 non-commissioned officers, while in October and November 1939, two transports arrived from the Tulcza and Babadag areas. As a result, the camp's population increased to around 1,000. As a result of the action of concentrating soldiers and officers in four collective camps, the camp was already liquidated in December 1939. There were also civilian refugees in Rosiori de Vede. There is confirmed information about four burials of Poles in the local cemetery No. 1. Two wooden crosses and a wooden fence were preserved here until 1987. In 1987 a magnificent common concrete gravestone with a marble slab was erected. The slab bears the Polish emblem from the communist period and an inscription in Polish and Romanian: "The resting place of the / Polish refugees / whose / Nazi onslaught in 1939 / threw them on guest / Romanian soil". The horizontally placed plaque bears the names, surnames and dates of death of three people: Józef Cyrankiewicz, Stanisław Gbyl and Helena Trębaczkiewicz. The stately nature of the gravestone is unusual for Polish graves in Romania, but it does not distinguish it from the tombs in its surroundings. It may have been intended as a special commemoration of the Polish Army officer Jozef Cyrankiewicz, the father of a member of the communist government, who rests here. There is no information on whether the location of the monument actually reflects the resting place of the persons commemorated. It is also not known where the unmortified Aleksander Czaciak, who is listed in the documentation of the former Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites from the 1970s as being buried in this cemetery, rests.
