Coat of arms of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth on the facade of the Theatine Church on Odeonsplatz in Munich

The façade of the Baroque temple is decorated with a Polish accent. At the top of the building, the coat of arms of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is placed between the symmetrical towers at the top of the façade. This is a remarkable reminder of the marriage of Therese Kunegunda Sobieska to the Elector of Bavaria, Maximilian II Emmanuel.
Teresa Kunegunda Sobieska, Queen of Poland, was married in 1695 to Maximilian II Emmanuel, Elector of Bavaria and Royal Governor-General of the Spanish Netherlands. After residing in Brussels in accordance with the wedding ceremony, she entered Munich, the capital of Bavaria, in April 1701. With this marriage, Teresa Kunegunda Sobieska became the ruler of one of the most powerful German states. She was the only child of Jan Sobieski to sit on the throne. Called "Kurfürstin Therese Kunigunde" since her marriage, she sat on the throne of Bavaria in particularly difficult times. Her spouse, the Elector, became embroiled in the war of succession to Charles II, which led to the exile of both of them for almost 10 years, from August 1704 to spring 1715. Teresa Kunegunda died in 1730 in Venice. She was known for her charitable activities, as well as her patronage of music and science. Teresa Kunegunda Sobieska was laid to rest in the crypt of this very church.
