Biography:

Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860-1941), son of Jan Paderewski and Polixena, née Nowicka. He was a Polish pianist, composer, independence activist, statesman and politician. He was educated at the Warsaw Institute of Music. In 1881, he went to Berlin, after which he travelled further across Europe. Between 1891 and 1892, he gave highly successful concerts in the USA. These positive experiences prompted him to emigrate to America. In 1899, he married Helena Maria Gorska, née Rosen (this was his second marriage). The couple moved to Switzerland, settling in Morges. Paderewski was actively involved in the Polish cause, taking advantage of his great popularity. In 1915, together with Henryk Sienkiewicz, he founded the Swiss General Committee for Relief of War Victims in Poland in Vevey.
