Ceremonial unveiling of the Adam Mickiewicz monument in Paris

Photographic account of the ceremony of the unveiling of the Adam Mickiewicz monument in Paris and a short description of the event in the magazine "Świat", 1929, no. 19, pp. 14-16 (public domain, reprinted after Mazovia Digital Library). The monument was unveiled on 29 April 1929 on the Place d'Alma (now located in the park on the Cours Albert I). The ceremony was attended by guests from Poland, including Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Ignacy Daszyński and Ferdynand Ruszczyc.

A modernised reading of the text.

Unveiling of a monument to A. Mickiewicz in Paris.

The unveiling became a splendid celebration of Franco-Polish friendship, which all the speakers confirmed by calling the monument to our bard a symbol of that friendship. After the playing of the national anthems, Mr Lewandowski, Vice-President of the Franco-Polish Committee, took the floor. This was followed by a speech by Mr Lemarchand, vice-president of the City Council, giving an eloquent expression of Paris' love for Poland and Mickiewicz. The Minister of Education, Mr Marraud, in a longer speech characterised the work of our Bard and welcomed Poland on behalf of the government. The Ambassador responded on behalf of the Polish Government with a panache and profound force of conviction that made a huge impression on those present.

Crowds lined the grandstands of Alma Square. The cream of the Polish intelligentsia from Poland and Paris gathered in the packed official tribune, alongside the French elite, the Ministers for Education, Mr Marraud, War, Mr Painlevé, the representatives of the Republic, the President of the Republic and all the Ministers. Speakers of the Senate and Sejm, Messrs Szymański, Daszyński and Posner, Minister Czar, Director F. Potocki, delegates from universities, academies and scientific associations, President Kostanecki, Rector Kallenbach, Prof. J. Chrzanowski, Pro-rector X. Gerstman, Prof. Ujejski, T. Grabowski, Ruszczyc, Rev. Z. Lubomirski, Mr Lutostański, Prof. M. Kridl, W. Lednicki, delegates of Polish writers: Mr A. Strug, Kaden-Bandrowski, President of journalists Z. Dębicki, numerous MPs - Mr Targowski, Count M. Zamoyski, etc.

Master Paderewski and Master A. Bourdelle were greeted with ovations. Members and descendants of the Mickiewicz family were present: J. R. Mickiewicz, the Poet's son, Mrs M. Mickiewiczówna, Dr L. Górecki, the Poet's grandsons, etc., took their places of honour.

The numerous and concentrated crowd at the feet of the Poet-Pilgrim, the colourful forest of Polish banners - the wonderful weather - all favoured the grandeur of this unforgettable manifestation.
