Anatomical Institute of the University of Bern

A rectangular building with two inner courtyards, constructed as part of the university's expansion at the end of the 19th century. Together with the neighbouring buildings of the Institute of Physiology and the now defunct Institute of Chemistry, it formed an ensemble with a unified neo-renaissance architecture with elements of neo-classicism, standing on the border of the new university district of Muessmatt, well visible to those arriving here from the city centre.

The functional layout of the building is modelled to some extent on the Anatomical Institute of the University of Vienna. The details of the solutions adopted were the subject of a dispute between the architects ¬ the first version of the design was prepared by arch. Adolf Tièche in collaboration with the director of the Anatomical Institute in Bern, Hans Strasser. Stempkowski's design, which was finally realised, was a counter-proposal to the original concept. Instead of a compact block, Kantonsbaumeister proposed a more elaborate layout, in which the massive two-storey front wing was followed by single-storey connecting passages leading to the rear wing, in which the compositional dominant of the whole was situated on the axis of the entrance - a two-storey auditorium decorated with Neo-Renaissance paintings.

The ground floor of the entire complex is devoted to practical classes.

With all its similarities to the neighbouring Hallerianum, the Anatomical Institute building is characterised by a slightly more ornate façade, with a floral ornamented tympanum and Doric aedicula framing the main entrance to the building.

In recent years, the building has been restored and converted into a teaching centre with separate areas for individual study (Lernzentrum ¬ designed by Campanile & Michetti, 2004).

Technical data: brick buildings with a brick façade.
