Inventory of Polish cemeteries and graves in Ukraine

In 2018, an inventory of cemeteries in two regions in Ukraine was carried out: the former Ternopil district and the former Yavorov district.

The inventory work carried out by the Polonika Institute on cemeteries located in Ukraine is a continuation of activities carried out in previous years thanks to funding from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and aimed at creating a database of Polish cemeteries abroad.

The project has resulted in the documentation of several hundred tombstones of outstanding artistic and historical value, concentrated in several dozen cemeteries. These activities are particularly important because this sphere of Polish heritage abroad is subject to rapid destruction and disappearance, influenced not only by demography, but also the need to exploit old graves (especially in cities), and above all by climatic conditions.

The result of the project is the publication of a catalogue of cemeteries covered by the research, available online.
