Iwona Lemke-Konart - interdisciplinary artist

She graduated from the Secondary School of Fine Arts in Szczecin. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. She made a diploma in serigraphy and defended her master's thesis under professor Janusz Bogucki on the Permafo Gallery. She participated in the independent art movement of the 1970s and 1980s, in creative activities and plein-air events. One of her projects was 'Mail Art - Women's Art', which consisted of sending original postcards to various people. The project was the artist's commentary and at the same time her response to the feminist art of the time. Lemke-Konart ran the student gallery 'S' in Toruń, where she organised many exhibitions and important events in the avant-garde circle. In 1983, the artist realised a performance 'Pro/La manifesto' at Pro/la, Andrzej Partum's gallery and also formulated a manifesto polemising with Partum's work.

Since 1990, Lemke-Konart has lived in Canada. She did the Computer Application in Graphic Design course at the University of Toronto and the Editorial Design Course at the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD). She started her own graphic design company, Fresh Brandt, doing projects for companies related to healthy food production. The artist has participated in many independent art projects in Canada, Japan, Western Europe and Poland. She is interested in exploring, without being particularly attached to a specific artistic medium, the human condition, emotions, and the situation of women, using a variety of intuitively used forms of expression. The main material of her work is photography, which the artist transforms into serigraphy, undergoes digital processing and complements with drawing and other graphic elements.

The artist has created series of photographs including: Market, 1979; The Limits of Human Possibility, 1981; Real Information, 1985; Connection, 2001. Between 1990 and 2014, she worked on the series 'Archive', consisting of four self-portraits created as a mosaic from scraps of old photographs. Iwona Lemke-Konart's art combines wit and seriousness and is minimalist, reduced to an apt message. The artist creates in a 'project system' - she works with a selected theme in a series of media: drawing, film, photography, author publications and an artist book. She published her own booklets, designed by herself, entitled Boundaries of Human Possibilities, Warsaw, 1985 and Real Information, Warsaw, 1986, wanting to interpret a previously realised idea in a different form.

The artist's works have participated in exhibitions: Architecture of Gender (Center for Video, Music, Dance, Performance, Film, Literature) in New York, 2001; TATE Modern, London, 2004; Arton Foundation, Women's Art - Iwona Lemke-Konart, 2019; Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, Her Own Way, Tokyo, 2019. The artist is a member of the Insight Meditation Toronto group, whose activities relate to her earlier explorations and inspire her to further creative activities based on intuition, emotions and reflection on the human condition in the contemporary world.
