Biography:

Jan Gockowski (d. 18th century), industrialist and merchant. He married the daughter of Krystian Blum, owner of a velvet factory. After his father-in-law's death, he took over the factory and obtained a ban on the import of silk and velvet, which allowed the Berlin manufactories to flourish. He became one of the richest industrialists in Berlin, taking over other factories and establishing a porcelain factory.

During the Seven Years' War, he negotiated a reduction in the contribution imposed by the Russians on the people of Berlin from four million thalers to one and a half million, vouching for the rest of the sum. After the war, his property was seized by his creditors and his valuable art collection was sold to repay his debts. Some of the paintings went to the Hermitage in St Petersburg. He died in poverty.
