Jan Kamieński - caricaturist, illustrator, painter and sculptor

He began his artistic studies in Poznań and continued them at the Ecole des Arts et Matiers in Paris. After the outbreak of war, he became involved in the Polish underground struggle, trained as a special agent, and was sent to Dresden, where he carried out underground activities while also studying at the Dresden Art Academy. In 1949 he emigrated to Canada and settled in Winnipeg.

In 1958, he took up a position as an illustrator at the Winnipeg Tribune and by 1980, his painterly and witty work adorned the pages of the paper. He was involved in film animation, was an art critic, wrote in the Polish weekly 'Czas' and painted. He exhibited his work in 1969 at the Politics' 65 exhibition at The Yellow Door Gallery. In the same year in Montreal, at an exhibition of Polish artists, Kamieński presented works in wood.

He was awarded prizes for his works: City of Dresden Prize in 1947. - printmaking, the Prix du Salon International de Caricature in 1963 in Montreal, the National Newspaper Award for Editorial Cartooning in 1964. In 1994, at an exhibition at Gallery 454 in Winnipeg, Kamienski showed his paintings from the 1980s and 1990s. The oils, with a variety of subjects: the Canadian landscape, the nature of the Greek islands, exotic landscapes from the Fiji Islands, the streets of various cities - are painterly notes from numerous journeys, all in a post-impressionist style with a sharp colour palette reminiscent of Van Gogh's paintings.

An exhibition at the Piano Nobile Gallery, in 1998, presented eighteen of Kamieński's oils with the theme of sky and clouds. In 2008. Kamienski published his war memoirs: 'Hidden in the Enemy's Sight'. Part of the artist's private archive is held in the Emigration Archive at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.
