Biography:

Jan Madej (1905-1989), folk sculptor, farmer, shoemaker and bricklayer from Dziewin (Bocheński poviat, Małopolskie Voivodeship). He had been carving since childhood. He began to earn money from his work in the 1960s. He created mainly sculptures on sacred themes, inspired by traditional religious iconography. He participated in competitions, including 'Copernicus in folk sculpture' (1973). His works have won recognition at home and abroad. Member of the Association of Folk Artists. His work was continued by his son, Jan Paweł Madej.
