The cathedral was built in the 15th century and its construction is attributed to Bishop Maciej of Stara Łomża or Pavel of Bojańczyce. In the 16th century it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style. In 1672, during the Turkish occupation, the temple was converted into a mosque. In 1699, it became a Catholic temple again. The building partially burnt down in 1820 and was rebuilt in the late Baroque style after the fire. The altar was funded by Stefan Rupniewski. Many Poles are buried in the crypt of the church, including Jan Dembowski, Mikołaj Górski and Jan de Witte.
