Church of Our Lady of Consolation in Sokal

The ruined Church of Our Lady of Consolation, formerly known as the Church of the Virgin Mary, is located in Sokal. The temple, which used to be a Roman Catholic Bernardine convent church, was built in the 17th century. It served the local Polish population for many years until 1951, when it was transformed into a maximum security prison following a change in borders. It served this function until 2012, when it was partially destroyed by fire. Today, all that remains of the former church are the walls of the main nave and the tower. Before the Second World War, the building was considered one of the most valuable examples of Baroque architecture in the Borderlands of the Second Polish Republic, and was also a place of veneration for Our Lady of Sokal.
