Memorial Church of Rev. Bandurski in Sokal

The text mentions the story of Fr Bandurski's efforts to build a church in his hometown of Sokal. The city council was to offer a site near the house where Fr. Bandurski - unfortunately the church stood unfinished during the war, and soon afterwards bishop Bandurski died. Bandurski died. Construction work was interrupted for lack of funds at the time of writing this press release (Source: "Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny", Krakow 1936, no. 112, p. 13, after: Małopolska Biblioteka Cyfrowa).

Church-monument to Rev. Bishop Bandurski in Sokal.

From Sokal reports (Si): Apart from his origins, many cordial knots connected the Revd Bishop Władysław Bandurski with Sokal. This was evidenced by his initiation as Lviv suffragan before the outbreak of World War II of a campaign to build in Sokal a representative Roman Catholic church in the inner city, of which the city was deprived.

The magnificent former St John the Baptist Collegiate Church was completely destroyed during the third partition of Poland, and the Austrian government, after the cassation of the Brigidines, moved the local rectory to their church and monastery built at the beginning of the 17th century in the Suburb, where it still resides. So when in 1912 the impressive Greek-Catholic church in the city centre was built, the great son of Sokal began to strive for the construction of a proper church. These efforts proved successful as the City Council offered a beautiful plot of land right next to the house where Bishop Bandurski was born, and an advance payment from the Austrian government and a substantial amount from the Bishop's private collection enabled him to solemnly consecrate the foundation stone on the eve of the outbreak of the World War, with the participation of the late Archbishop Bilczewski.

The long war years made it impossible to complete the work he had begun, but unfortunately Bishop Bandurski died shortly afterwards. It was then that the local community decided to continue the construction that had begun as a memorial church to Revd. Władysław Bandurski, the great almsman who loved poverty and mercy. However, the construction, which started three years ago, was interrupted due to a lack of funds, which only now have been obtained to enable work to begin in the coming days.
