Corpus Christi parish church in Krzemienica, Belarus

Thanks to the efforts of the owners of Krzemienica and their heir, it was possible to build a temple for the Lateran canons. It was the first institution of this congregation in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Construction of the church in Krzemienica - a short history
. In 1617 the owners of Krzemienica, the castellan of Vitebsk Mikolaj Wolski and his wife Barbara Woynianka, began efforts to build a temple and monastery intended for the Lateran Canons (a clerical order based on the Rule of St Augustine). The foundation stone of the church was laid in 1619, while construction of the first Lateran congregation in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, founded as a branch of the Corpus Christi convent in Krakow, began in 1620. Both projects were halted by the premature death of both founders. Barbara Wolska, however, obliged her son Casimir by a testamentary clause to complete the foundation - the church was erected before 1629, and the monastery as late as 1646.

Corpus Christi Church and its furnishings
. The body of the church is a mixture of Renaissance style and late Gothic elements. The brick church is rectangular in plan, with a slightly lower, semicircular closed presbytery. In front of the façade, topped with a stepped arcaded gable, a classicist porch was added. The rather modest external appearance of the building is not at all promising for an interesting interior.

In the single-nave space, a valuable set of Mannerist furnishings has been preserved, dating from around 1630, i.e. when the church was built. A double oak door decorated with hardware ornamentation leads inside. Decorated with relief and full-plastic sculptures, the main altar, together with the tabernacle standing on it, belongs to a small group of such objects preserved in the territory of the historical Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The wooden, repainted communion balustrade, separating the nave from the presbytery, is balustered, with decoration in the motifs of volutes, gristle and hearts. The balcony of the music choir, on the other hand, has recessed rectangular fields originally filled with painted scenes of musical saints.

Wolski tombstone
One of the most interesting buildings in Silicienice is the tombstone of the church's founders, Mikołaj and Barbara Wolski, made of Bolechowice marble and Pińczów limestone. It was founded between 1623 and 1639 by their son Kazimierz, and made by a workshop from Chęciny, near Kielce. Both the beam of the tombstone and the pedestal bear inscriptions referring to the deceased, the author of which was most probably Kazimierz.

The full-plastic figures of the deceased, kneeling by the crucifix, are placed in the central arcade of the architectural frame, whose form is reminiscent of a triumphal arch. Wolski's knightly and noble status is emphasised by the armour and the helmet and sabre. Barbara Woynianka is depicted in a manner in keeping with tradition, as a married woman in a long dress and a doublet on her head. The crowning, in the form of two volute cartouches, is filled with the four-field shields of arms: on the left of Mikołaj Wolski, with the half-Cozic, Gozdawa, Łabędź and Trąby coats of arms; on the right of Barbara Woynianka Wolska, with the Trąby, Ogończyk, Korczak and Lewart coats of arms.

Of great interest is the association with the Wolski tombstone of small sandstone sculptures created around 1630. They represent the Risen Christ and the allegories of Faith, Prudence and Constancy. Originally they may have stood in the side niches of the tombstone and in its finial, but are now stored in the church sacristy.

Pulpit
At the north wall of the chancel of the church is the Mannerist pulpit. The walls of the pulpit are decorated with rectangular panels with painted figures of the Doctors of the Church, with the central panel depicting Christ - the Saviour of the World. These panels are separated by hermatic pilasters in the shape of half-figures of angels.

The pulpit has not preserved its original shape; the later, already Baroque, is its finial and prominent trailing edge. It replaced the original shaft, the sculpture representing Moses, which is now hung on the wall and supported by the pulpit sill. This type of basket support is not unique; similar shafts in the form of a figure of the leader of the Israelites were also found in Evangelical churches from the Königsberg area and north-eastern Poland.

Altarpiece of Our Lady of the Dawn Gate
Noteworthy is the image of Our Lady of the Dawn Gate from the altar set by the rainbow arch on the southern (right) side. It is a good copy of the Vilnius image, and it is covered with very interesting decorations - a silver, gilded, trussed dress with tall flowers, and a completely unique golden crown, decorated with coloured, jeweled glass, with a wooden filling, covered with red velvet, and an engraved foundation inscription from around 1625. It reads: "IN HONOUR AND FOR EVERLASTING GLORY TO P. THE CROWN WAS GIVEN BY ME TO THE IMAGE OF THE MIRACULOUS PANNY MARYEY KRZEMIENICKIEY | KAZIMIERZ KARP AND DOROTA WYSOCKA THAT SHE MIRACULOUSLY PRESERVED IT FOR POSTERITY AND THAT ALL OF US HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH THE HEALTH AND BLESSING OF HER CLOSE FRIEND | FOR POSTERITY MEN: JULY 2".

There is another rarity associated with the Ostra Brama altar - a parchment consecration certificate, signed by Bishop Jan Dowgiałło Zawisza of Vilnius in 1657, enclosed in a small tin box. An inscription was engraved on the sliding top: "Pro Altare B[eatissimae] Mariae Virg[inis]".

Bell tower
Located near the church, the Baroque bell tower, erected around 1765, is notable for its neat proportions and pretty, broken roof. Not even a trace remains of the wood-carved altar with paintings of St Sebastian, St Roch and St Rosalie, mentioned in 1783, or of the paintings and sculptures described in old inventories. It is also regrettable that the historic bells have not survived to our times, above all the oldest one, with the inscription: "Verbum Domini manet in eternum. Hanus Ster fecit me Anno 1620' - they were looted by the Russians during the First World War. In 1930, the belfry was renovated through the efforts of Father Jozef Malinowski, at which time the three bells that still exist today were purchased from the foundry of Franciszek Bregosz in Wloclawek.

Time of origin:
1619 - foundation stone; before 1629 staging; 1657 - consecration
