Church of the Transfiguration in Břostovica Wielka

The Church of the Transfiguration of Our Lord in Bostovitsa Wielka - a Roman Catholic parish church in Bostovitsa Wielka, a district town of the Grodno region of the Republic of Belarus. Brick church in the style of modernized neo-Gothic, built in 1909-1912.

. History
The Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord is the second parish in the history of Bostovitsa Wielka. The first, dedicated to the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, was dissolved by decree of the Governor of Grodno in 1865, and a year later the mid-18th century Baroque church standing by the town square was closed and handed over for use to the Orthodox Church.

After several years of efforts by local worshippers and the owners of the estate, Maria née Chodkiewicz and Józef Stanisław Korwin-Kossakowski, permission was granted by the Russian authorities on 12 June 1907 to build a new church. The Kossakowskis donated a plot of land near the palace for this purpose and, together with their parishioners, co-financed the construction. The project in the style of modernised neo-Gothic was designed by Ivan Plotnikov, a Gubernian architect from Grodno. In 1908, the Holy Transfiguration parish was founded. In 1908, the Holy Transfiguration parish was established. On 24 June 1909, the foundation stone was consecrated, and three years later, on 30 September 1912, the provincial inspection commission confirmed the completion of construction. On 2 October, the temple was solemnly consecrated by Fr Juliusz Alojzy Ellert, dean of Grodno, in the presence of visiting priests and a large gathering of the faithful. Fr Adolf Michniewicz became the first parish priest.

The newly built church was furnished with modest relics of the former parish church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The new church was furnished with modest relics from the former parish church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, including an 18th century crucifix. In 1912. Władysław and Maria Kossakowski, née Łempicka, founded the bell with the inscription 'S. Czerniewicz Pustelnik 1912'. In 1922. Maria Kossakowska funded a marble statue of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary for the tabernacle and a harmonium. In 1913, the church yard was enclosed by a wall of hewn stone, and a rectory in the form of a manor house was erected next to it.

In April 1920, the former parish church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was returned to the faithful, reconceptualised on 25 April 1920 and was a branch of the Transfiguration parish until the Second World War.

After the outbreak of war in 1939. the then parish priest Jan Tomaszewicz was forced to leave the parish. There was no permanent priest until 1989. In 1965, the authorities closed the temple, forbidding worship. The building was turned into a grain warehouse and later a bottle collection point. There were also plans to convert it into a sports hall, but in the 1970s the church was given the status of an architectural monument, which prevented redevelopment.

Until 1976, worshippers gathered in the wooden cemetery chapel from the 19th century, where relics of the church furnishings were also moved. However, the chapel burned down in 1976.

In 1988, the worshippers made their first efforts to return the church, crowned with success in June 1989. The destroyed building was returned to the Catholics, and on 7 July 1989 the first Mass was celebrated in the already repaired temple by Father Kazimierz Żylis from Indura. In 1990, the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the main altar setting were brought from Lithuania. On 10 November 1991, Bishop Aleksander Kashkevich of Grodno consecrated the church under the historic name of the Transfiguration of the Lord. In 2006, extensive renovation of the church and presbytery was carried out.

The parish is administered by Redemptorist priests.

Architecture and decoration of the church
. The brick church, in the style of modernised neo-Gothic, was built between 1909 and 1912. The facades are faced in hewn stone, with divisions made in plaster. The combination of these materials relates to the building tradition common in the Grodno region in the 19th century. The rectangular body of the building, with three naves in a basilica system, is closed from the west by a five-sided apse of the presbytery. The façade is flanked by a tall three-storey tower on a square plan with a protruding portal house enclosing the entrance, covered with a tent roof. The elevations are framed by scarps. Large ogival windows are surrounded by plaster bands, the second storey of the tower is decorated by a blind stepped gable with pinnacles.

In the modest interior, divided into naves by arcades supported by massive pillars, the neo-Baroque altar brought from Lithuania in the 1990s contains a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is accompanied by statues of St Anthony and St Francis made by local carpenter Henryk Romanczuk. In the chapel to the left of the presbytery, a neo-Gothic altar contains an image of Our Lady of the Dawn Gate.

Two epitaph plates have survived from the former decoration: that of Stanisław Kazimierz hr Korwin Kossakowski (1837-1905) and that of his wife Aleksandra of the Chodkiewicz family (1840-1880).

In the porch hangs a late Baroque crucifix from the mid-18th century, the only surviving piece of equipment in the 'old' Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, still considered miraculous in 1925.
