Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Uhnovo

Photo awarded in the Polonics Institute's 'Heritage without borders' competition in 2024.

Uhnów was first mentioned in 1360. A Catholic parish was established in 1470, at which time a wooden church was erected. After the destruction of the wooden church, a brick church was built on the same site in 1695 with the foundation of the Dunin family. The church was closed in 1951 after Poles were resettled from the area as a result of the HT action (correction of borders) when the town of Uhnów became part of the USSR. Today the church is abandoned and falls into disrepair every year. However, a holy mass is held here twice a year. On these occasions, a temporary border crossing is opened.
