On 12.01.1919, there was fighting for the town between Poles and Ukrainians. At least 7 Polish soldiers were killed. The fallen were buried in a plot in the old cemetery, located on an escarpment deep inside the necropolis. 35 NN Polish soldiers, killed in the summer of 1920 in battles with the Bolsheviks, were also buried in the plot. The area of the cemetery plot was fenced with stone pillars connected by a cast iron chain. A monument was also erected, built of irregular stone blocks, topped with a cross.The inscription reads: "In honour and memory of 35 unknown soldiers of the Polish Army who died heroic deaths in defence of faith and homeland in battles against the Bolshevik invasion in the summer of 1920 on the fields of the żółkiewska land may their homeland be light".After the Second World War the cemetery was destroyed by building it up with civilian burials, and the fence was also destroyed. The partially destroyed main monument and only one soldier's grave have survived to the present day. In 1995 the slab on the monument was conserved by the Foundation for the Preservation of Monuments in Warsaw.It was then that a tombstone was found behind the monument, in which Stanisław Piłat, killed in 1919, is believed to be buried; a cast-iron cross with a plaque from the grave of Bronisław Kuśnierz, killed in 1920, was also found. (the gravestone no longer exists). This cross was fitted into the grave slab of Stanislaw Pilat. It is likely that this alteration caused the grave slab to break.
