Query of Polish iconographic material from the Second Polish Republic

In the collections of the Lithuanian Central State Archive and the Lithuanian National Museum, many posters and pamphlet prints from the Second Republic are preserved. Some of them are unique and were previously unknown to Polish researchers.

As part of the documentation of Polish cultural heritage in Lithuania, in 2018 the POLONIKA Institute commissioned Małgorzata Myślicka and Michał Witkowski to carry out a search in the collections of the Lithuanian Central State Archive and the Lithuanian National Museum. As a result, it was discovered that a large number of posters and ephemeral prints from the Second Republic have been preserved. Some of them are unique and were not previously known to Polish researchers.

It was shown that the polonica in the Lithuanian Central State Archives include mainly documents produced by the state administration, local government and other institutions or organisations in 1919-1939. During the search, rich and varied iconographic material was found. The largest collection of material consists of movie posters and placards, placards with social, cultural, educational, sporting content, and placards related to the functioning of Vilnius University and academic associations.

As part of a search conducted at the Iconography Department of the Lithuanian National Museum, posters and placards of a Polonik-like nature from the 19th century to 1945 were identified. Working photographs were taken of all the catalogued exhibits, using the place of origin and content of the materials as the criterion for selection.

Source research was also carried out in the collection of the Poster Museum in Wilanów, where posters and placards relating to the former eastern lands of the Republic of Poland were identified. The entire research was supplemented by a search in the Archive of New Files in Warsaw.

The result of the conducted activities was the preparation of catalogue notes and the taking of 400 photographs of posters, placards and leaflets relating to the former eastern lands of the Republic of Poland. The most interesting objects will be available in the digital resources of the Polonica Institute.
