Lutsk

In the double issue 11-12, several texts describe Lutsk in detail, its history and its most famous monuments, with Lutsk's Lubart Castle at the forefront. The history of this building is recalled in detail, and the text is accompanied by photographs, also from a bird's eye view. In subsequent articles, we find, among other things, recollections of J. Piłsudski's stay in Lutsk, as well as botanical or geographical texts connected with this place and its surroundings (Source: "Ziemia. Tygodnik Krajoznawczy Ilustrowany' Warsaw 1937, Nos. 11-12, after: Biblioteka Cyfrowa Wielkopolska).

A modernised reading of the text

Lubart Castle in Lutsk.

When I arrived in Lutsk at the end of May 1816, it had been thirty years since I had visited the city. At that time, it was not striking in its splendour, but at least the Lord's festivals were complete, the burghers were unburdened in the possession of their own houses. Today, fires, plagues and equally avenging hospitals and war stays have brought it to a complete collapse. Suburbs have not yet risen from the ashes either, for who will build when someone else is taking his house? After so many fires, the houses are covered in plaster - overnight.

Apart from the cathedral, transferred to the Jesuits after the fire in 1781, all the churches are almost destroyed. A fire from the quarrymen in 1803 to the Dominican monastery burned it down completely with its expensive library. The military hospital established in the monastery of the Brothers of St. John of God, having destroyed it completely, moved to the Carmelites; having destroyed the Carmelites, it moved to the Trinitarians; from there it planned to move to Młynów, the splendid edifice of Mrs Uhodykiewicz. And so huge departments, maintained for the defence of the country, at the time of peace destroy the work, the efforts of whole generations, and makes the one century, made by the other century, to inspire, to improve, will give them started by the other century to make ruin.

What could continuous war and the enemy do worse! The town is so busy with quarters that the land and municipal courts hold their sessions in the Jews' tavern. The high ramparts that once surrounded the town, much reduced and broken in many places, nevertheless house the beautiful castle walls with three towers, the work of Świdrygiełło, although the beauty of the brickwork could be considered the work of Casimir the Great. In the middle you can still see the remains of the walls of the former church. One of the towers still houses the land and municipal archives
