Biography:

Ludwik Wołowski (1810-1876), born in Warsaw, son of Franciszek Wołowski, an advocate of the Court of Appeal of the Duchy of Warsaw, and Tekla. In 1831, after the outbreak of the November Rising, Wołowski went into exile, where he was associated with French intellectual circles for many years. In Paris, he served as secretary to the diplomatic agent, and later became a professor at the School of Arts and Crafts (Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers) and a senator under Napoleon III. In 1833, in Paris, Louis Wołowski married Laura Guerin, daughter of Henri Guerin, former inspector-general of the postal service, and Catherine Lanckoronski.

Wołowski was also well known as a member of the French Institute, the Central Agricultural Society and a recipient of the Legion of Honour. He died on 15 August 1876 in Gisors (Eure) at the age of 67. He was buried on 18 August 1876 in Paris, at the Church de la Trinité, after a funeral service (ZKwBP hourglass French). The burial ceremony was attended by his wife Laura and children, as well as numerous relatives, including his sons Casimir and Félix Wołowski and son-in-law Louis Passy.

According to the B.C. Burial Books. Louis Wołowski was buried in the crypt de la Ville, his body having been brought from Gisors on 18 August 1876 and then transferred to Paris on 9 September 1876. In the Burial Books, Wołowski is listed under the annual number 73 and the general number 88,998.

Ludwik Wolowski was deeply involved in political and cultural activities, leaving behind many contributions which are documented in works such as La vie et les travaux de Wolowski by E. Levasseur (1877).
