Biography:

Maciej Tadeusz Piotrowski (1920-1978), sculptor, born in Kraków, son of Tadeusz Piotrowski and Irena (née Orszulska). He studied at the Henryk Sienkiewicz IV State Gymnasium. He also attended the conservatory to learn piano. He took part in the September Campaign, and the war interrupted his education. From 1944, he lived in Switzerland. He married Anna Brandenberger. In Winterthur he opened his first sculpture workshop. The Polish Museum in Rapperswil commissioned him to create a sculpture entitled Landing in Normandy. This was the artist's first completed commission. From 1946 to 1951 he was a teacher at the Migros Klubschule in Winterthur. His artistic career took off after 1952. He created in various media, experimented and explored. In 1966 Mathis won a competition for the decoration of a school building in Rickenbach. He died in a car accident in 1978. His works are in his family's private collection, the collection of the town of Winterhur and other private collections.
