Mausoleum of Franciszek Żwirka and Stanisław Wigury in Cierlicek

In Cierlicko, at the site of the tragic death of Franciszek Żwirka and Stanisław Wigura, there was a chapel-mausoleum until 1940. Initially, the site was commemorated only by a birch cross and preserved tree fragments against which the Polish pilots' plane crashed. In 1935, thanks to the support of the Polish community, a small mausoleum was erected there. The area was fenced off and a gate with the inscription 'Żwirki i Wigury start to eternity' was erected at the entrance. The design was prepared by the builder Rygiel from Fryštát and the sculptors Julius Pelikán from Olomouc and Jan Raszka. Unfortunately, in 1940, during the German occupation, the mausoleum and the surrounding area were destroyed. Only fragments of the gate were rescued, including wooden planks that are now in the Polish House in Koscielec. After the war, the site was commemorated again - a monument was created with a figure of an aviator supported on a propeller, decorated with the emblems of Poland and Czechoslovakia.
