Biography:

Mieczysław Najdorf (1910-1997), born in Grodzisk Mazowiecki, chess player.

He learned the art of chess under the tutelage of Dawid Przepiórka and Ksawery Tartakower. In the 1930s, he was one of the leading Polish chess players, winning medals at chess Olympiads and titles of champion of Warsaw and Poland.

In 1939 he took part in the Chess Olympiad in Buenos Aires. During the tournament, World War II broke out - Najdorf, like many other chess players from Europe, decided to stay in Argentina. During the war, he lost his entire family, including his wife and daughter. In 1944, he obtained Argentine citizenship and over the following years represented the country internationally, winning numerous Olympic medals and succeeding in prestigious tournaments.

He is best known for his contribution to debit theory - one of the most popular variants of the Sicilian defence (the Najdorf variant) bears his name.

He also held the record for blind simultaneous play, and outside of chess he was successful in business, becoming one of the wealthiest Argentines. In 1996, he became an Honorary Member of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
