Mass grave with the remains of Józef Wysocki at Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris

In the 19th century, many Poles living in France chose to be buried in mass graves due to a lack of adequate financial resources and a desire to be buried near the resting places of national heroes. One such grave is the one in which the remains of a Polish Army general, participant in the national uprisings of 1831, 1848 and 1863 and the Hungarian uprising of 1848-1849, Józef (Joseph) Wysocki (1809-1873), are interred, located in plot 6 on the Grammont avenue in the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris.

The mass grave with Wysocki's remains consists of a sarcophagus with a column on a small pedestal, topped by a cross. In addition to Wysocki, other Polish émigré soldiers rest in the stone tomb, as indicated by inscriptions on marble plaques surrounding the column:

Joseph Betcher (1812-1876) - officer, participant in the November Uprising

Joseph (Joseph) Dobrowolski (1810-1877) - captain, participant of the November Uprising, between 1854-1855 served in the Ottoman Empire, head of diplomatic mission in France

Józef (Joseph) Dunowski (1801-1877) - engineer and officer, participant of the November Uprising

Józef Gabliński (1803-1876) - merchant and officer, participant of the November Uprising

Jules Jasieńczyk Michalowski (1808-1878) - journalist and officer, participant of the November Uprising

Antoine Juriewicz (1842-1868) - participant of the January Uprising in Ukraine, died as a result of wounds received during the Battle of Soloveitcha

Casimir Piędzicki (1803-1875) - Captain, decorated with the Virtuti Militari Cross

Ludwik (Louis) Sobolewski (1840 - 7 July 1878) - engineer

Michel Szweycer (1809-1871) - photographer and officer, participant of the January Uprising, decorated with the Virtuti Militari Cross for participation in the Battle of Ostro (1831)

Józef (Joseph) Teleżyński (1833-1876) - violinist, pedagogue, graduate of the Conservatory of Music in Paris

Ignacy Zaleski (d. 13.02.1869) - artist, exiled to Siberia in the years 1863-1868.

In addition, the remains of over a dozen other people of Polish descent, many of them related to those mentioned above, were deposited in the grave. Buried here were, among others:

Dr Edmond Korablewicz (1804-1875)
