Graves of knights killed in the battle between Hetman Jan Tarnowski and the Wallachian Hospodar in 1531.

On 4.12.1530, the Moldavians under the leadership of hospodar Piotr Raresz, breaking the treaty with Poland, crossed the border of Pokucie. This led to a whole series of battles, including for the castle in Gwoździec, which, despite the siege, was kept in Polish hands thanks to the relief of Hetman Jan Tarnowski's army. On 21.08.1531 the hetman stood in Obertyn and received the unexpected news that Moldavians in the number of more than 18 thousand troops with 50 cannons were heading straight for Obertyn. The Hetman ordered a camp to be formed from carts. The horses were unharnessed and placed inside the wagons. The camp formed was 350 by 220 metres, with an open south-eastern corner towards Obertyn, where 12 cannons were placed. The battle began on the morning of 22.08.1531. Thanks to the commanding skills of Hetman Tarnowski, the Polish army, despite being much less numerous than the attackers, won the battle. Between 500 and 600 knights were killed in the hetman's army, the Moldavian losses amounted to about 8,000 dead. The dead were buried in 4 barrows on the battlefield. There is a legend that the "Sigismund" bell at Wawel Castle was cast from the cannons captured at Obertyn, but this is not true, as the bell was made in 1530. - a year before the battle. However, this message is persistently repeated by many authors. In 1931, a cross was erected on one of the barrows strewn after the battle, with a cast-iron plate affixed to it bearing the inscription: "To the Polish knights fallen here / on the four-hundredth anniversary of the victory / "Sokolstwo Polskie" / 22.8.1931". During the German bombardment in 1941, this cross was destroyed. The plaque was preserved in the house of one of the Ukrainians. Years later, it was found and taken to her by Natalia Tomyn, a teacher (many years later the plaque was placed on the restored cross). During the communist period, the authorities bore the intention of building a chemical warehouse on the site of the historical graves. Thanks to the protests of Natalia Tomyn and other Obertyn residents, this intention was not realised. On 8.11.1997 Father Alfons Górowski from Kolomyia consecrated a birch cross, which stood on the barrow in place of the pre-war iron cross. On 22.08.2001 a ceremony was held to consecrate the reconstructed iron cross, funded by the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites and the "Polish Community". - At that time, a surviving plaque from 1931 was placed here. A plaque in Ukrainian was embedded on the pedestal under the cross, its content informing about the restoration of the commemoration by obertinians from at home and abroad on the 470th anniversary of the battle. Later, the concrete plinth was covered with stone slate. On 22.08.2011 a brass plaque was attached to the cross, funded by the local government of Tarnów and the Tarnów district government. The plaque was initiated by Tarnów starost Mieczysław Kras, who visited Obertyn on the occasion of talks on cooperation between the Tarnów local government and the local government of the Khmelnytsky region. The inscription on the plaque (in Polish and Ukrainian) reads: "On the 480th anniversary of the victory of Hetman Jan Tarnowski at Obertyn to the memory of the common glory / Plaque founded by the native society of Tarnów and the Tarnów district / 22 VIII 2011". Employees of the General Consulate of the Republic of Poland in Lviv lay flowers at this grave every year on the anniversary of the battle.
