Tombstone of Adam and Aniela née Szymra Stravinsky

Located in the Catholic cemetery in Volkovysk, the gravestone belongs to the judge of the Slonim district, Adam Stravinsky, and his wife, Aniela née Szymro Stravinsky. Made of sandstone, it consists of a cross in the form of a tree trunk set on a three-stepped rock-shaped plinth and a two-stepped base. The cross is wrapped in ivy and its lower arm is entwined with shoots of a fruiting rowan tree. Olive branches grow from the second and third steps of the plinth. In addition, an anchor with a chain attached to it and an urn are visible on the third step. On the second step of the pedestal, there is an engraved inscription on the front:

S. P. / ANIELA z SZYMRÓW / STRAWIŃSKA / LIVED 28, DIED. 17 NOVEMBER 1840 / THE LATE / ADAM / STRAWIŃSKI / BORN. 1 JANUARY 1804 DIED. 5 AUGUST 1885 //.

On the first step of the pedestal, in the middle, is engraved the inscription: PEACE TO THEIR SHADOWS //. In turn, the signature of the tombstone's author is engraved in the lower left corner: B. Szyszkiewicz //.

Boleslaw Szyszkiewicz was one of the best Grodno sculptors. This artist had two workshops in Grodno. The first, was located on Jerozolimska Street (now Antonova), the second, on Garncarska Street. Most of his works can be found in the local catholic (parish) and orthodox cemeteries. In Poland, they can be found, among others, in cemeteries in Sejny and Suwałki. Szyszkiewicz very often used the romantic motif of a cross in the form of a tree trunk on rocks in his works. A characteristic feature was his fondness for plants and field flowers, which he carved in stone with great precision. He also did not shy away from classical forms - examples of these can be found above all in the Orthodox cemetery in Grodno.
