Tombstone of Jozef Filipovich in Olšany Cemetery in Prague

Among the Poles buried in the Olšany Cemetery in Prague is Jozef Filipowicz. At the present stage of research, knowledge about him is actually limited to the information on his gravestone monument. It is known that he came from Jagielnica, where the Filipowicz family of landowners is recorded, and in Prague he was probably the owner of a tenement house and a factory or glove factory. The inscription on his tombstone also states that he was the founder of the Polish Centre in Prague, which is confirmed by the press, and that he was one of the 33 founders of this organisation and a member from the moment the board was constituted on 13 June 1881.

The gravestone is in the form of a gabled obelisk on a two-stepped pedestal and base. The front of the obelisk is decorated with glazing, framed by a polished border. On it a cross in relief with arms ending in a trillium form, framed by two palm leaves tied with a bow at the base. Below, an ear plaque with an engraved inscription:

Jozef Filipowicz / householder, factory owner / of gloves, founder / of "Ognisko Polskie w Pradze" / born: in Jagielnica in Galicia / died on 23 June 1884 / in the 35th year of his life in Prague / Rest his soul! //.

The base with chamfered upper edges, the second cuboidal step with profiled upper edges, on which are engraved inscriptions of the Hlavacek family. A metal lantern for a candle is fixed on the axis. The second step of the pedestal passes through a quarter-circle indentation into the obelisk. On the second step of the pedestal an oval photograph on porcelain with a depiction of Jozef Filipowicz. The tombstone is made of dark magmatic rock perhaps monzonite.

Location of the gravestone part II, section 5, grave no. 85
