Tombstone of Józef Kapica and Władysława Słama-Kapica

The gravestone consists of two elements: a slab-stele placed on a base in the form of a cuboid and a band. The stele is made of Norwegian granite. It is characterised by a coarse grain and, after polishing, acquires a very high gloss with a characteristic shimmering blue "scale" .The stele, whose form resembles a cuboid, is topped with a different form. A significant part of the front of the panel is occupied by an inscription in sans-serif majuscule of various sizes (1). Next to the inscription on the right side adequate to the text are colour gravestone photographs in an oval shape with a decorative gold-coloured frame. The photographs depict busts of elderly people in three-quarter shots. The base of the stele also houses a recessed inscription in majuscule (2).

Just behind the gravestone is (laid flat on the ground) a previous sandstone stele of simple form with a semicircular finial (probably left after dismantling), measuring 51 x 25.5 x 5 cm. On one of the planes, in the upper part, there is an inscription made in depth with the chapter (additionally painted with black paint) (1).

State of preservation:

good

Comments on the state of preservation and visible restoration:

stele and base in a very good state of preservation. The lack of visible weathering and pollution and the gloss quality of the stone indicate that the object was set in the relatively recent past. The gravestone is covered with a light layer of dust, deposited especially on the horizontal planes. Minimal loss of paint coating is visible in a few places, which does not affect the perception of the text. The joints are slightly green (very narrow, almost invisible), which is probably due to the shaded location of the gravestone under the crowns of deciduous trees. The perfect state of preservation of the stele is contrasted by the concrete band, which is probably part of the previous gravestone. Overgrown with biological agents (moss, algae and lichen), soiled with soil, unlevelled and crooked, it is probably intended to show the size of the grave (at least in theory). It appears to be treated as an insignificant element of the grave. The observed state of preservation also indicates that the object has been recently tended to (interior of the band with freshly planted plants and no weeds). Also the surroundings of the gravestone are not overgrown with grass and are surrounded only by earthy ground. Unnoticeable is the slight forward tilt of the base to create a slight slope that allows water to run off the object.
