The local cemetery in the Estonian village of Kudjape contains the tombstone of Wladyslaw Wawrzyniec Mierzejewski, a doctor of Polish origin. He specialised in gynaecology and forensic medicine and is regarded as a pioneer of forensic gynaecology in Russia. After studying in St. Petersburg, he undertook a two-year scientific journey, during which he trained in Berlin, Paris, London, Venice, Vienna and Warsaw. He then ran the Roomassaare natural health facility in Kuressaare, Sarema. He died in 1918.
