The composition depicts a still life arranged on a table covered with a chequered cloth in shades of blue, navy and yellow. At the centre is a plant with broad green leaves in a red-and-pink pot. On the left is a glass carafe with a long neck and a broad, flattened body. On the right is a light-coloured decorative fruit bowl containing what appear to be apples, oranges and lemons. Individual pieces of fruit, presumably oranges and bananas, lie in the foreground. In the background, there is drapery in shades of blue and purple. The pictorial space is not rendered realistically. The table is clearly tilted towards the viewer, while the objects are arranged according to the logic of colour and the rhythm of colour patches rather than the conventions of strict perspective.

The painting is Post-Impressionist in character and colouristic in approach. The forms of the objects are simplified, the modelling is soft and the contours are sometimes blurred. The principal element is the interplay of colour: the cool blues and violets of the background and fabric contrast with the warm yellows, oranges and reds of the fruit.
