The painting ‘Still Life’ by Władysław Krzyżanowski

The composition depicts a still life arranged on a table covered with a checkered cloth in shades of blue, navy and yellow. In the centre is a plant with broad green leaves, set in a red-and-pink pot. On the left-hand side is a glass carafe with a long neck and a wide, flattened body. On the right-hand side of the composition is a light-coloured, decorative fruit bowl filled with fruit, most likely apples, oranges and lemons. In the foreground lie individual pieces of fruit, presumably oranges and bananas. In the background, drapery in shades of blue and purple is visible. The space has not been depicted realistically. The table is clearly tilted towards the viewer, and the objects have been arranged according to the logic of colour and the rhythm of the patches of colour, rather than according to strict perspective.

The painting is post-impressionist in character and colouristic in style. The forms of the objects are simplified, the modelling is soft, and the contours are sometimes blurred. The most important element is the interplay of colours: the cool blues and violets of the background and the fabric contrast with the warm yellows, oranges and reds of the fruit.

The work has been restored by the Polonika Institute
