Church of the Heart of Jesus in the fortress of Grozny in the Caucasus.

On 22 November 1864, a brick Catholic church was consecrated in the fortress of Grozny under the title of the Sacred Heart of Jesus with a large gathering of local residents. After obtaining permission from the government, the foundations of the church were laid in September 1862, and it was completed two years later, for which those who worked to build the church should be more grateful that it cost only 4,500 roubles.

The painting, appropriate to the church's title, was sent as a gift from St. Petersburg, while the organ, or rather harmonium, was bought from Mr. Orgelbrand's storehouse. The church stands on the left bank of the Suža river, flowing into the Terek, by the square and the road to the town, next to the military hospital and the fortress, planted with trees, flowers and surrounded by a fence. It is built according to a plan sent from Tiflis and, as can be seen from the attached engraving, has towers in the Gothic style.

Once more contributions have been collected, they will probably proceed to build a house next to the church and a house for the priest, who is the chaplain of the Tersk province.
