Polish monument in Mohacz.

In 1926, as the 400th anniversary of the Battle of Mohacz, national commemorative ceremonies were held in Hungary. One of these celebrations was held in Erd (a town near Budapest), where, on the initiative of Mr Ferdinand Leo Miklóssi, secretary of the Hungarian-Polish Association, with the assistance of the Historical War Museum, a memorial plaque was unveiled in honour of the Polish army which took part in the Battle of Mohacz, and which joined the Hungarian army in Erd. Mr Miklóssi also proposed back in 1927 that a monument be erected in Mohács to the Polish heroes who fell there. This project is now to be realised. At the last meeting of the Committee, attended by the former Minister Pekar, Baron Nyáry, the President of the Hungarian-Polish Society, Col. Hutiray, Miklóssi and others, Mr. Nyáry communicated that the monument would be made according to the drawing and idea of the artist Bodor and Dr. Bevilaqua. The Polish eagle on top of the monument is the work of the sculptor Szóda. The mayor of the city of Mohács, Dr Margittay, who was present at the meeting, stated that the foundation for the monument would be made by the city at its own expense. The date for the unveiling of the monument has been set for 29 August. Preparations are already underway, as it is hoped that many Poles will come to the ceremony to deepen and document Polish-Hungarian friendship.
