Description of Nesvizh Castle

The text describes the castle in Nesvizh in the Minsk province of Slutsk district. From 1533, the town was linked to the Radziwills. The castle itself is described, as well as the issue of the death of the last Ordynat, Dominik Radziwiłł, which 'put an end to the splendour of the castle' (Source: Tygodnik Illustrowany, Warsaw 1882, Series 3, T:13, p. 186, after: Digital Library of the University of Łódź).

The castle in Nesvizh

We have already written about the Nesvizh Castle, its history and monuments, more than once. It was extensively described in our "Tygodnik" by the late Syrokomla, F. M. Sobieszczański and Felicyan Suryn in their "Letters from a Journey". While presenting a view of the castle from the inside, we would like to mention, following "Ancient Poland", that Niasvizh, situated in the Minsk province, Slutsk district, was from 1533 the main town of the Radziwill dukes' entailment, surrounded by a rampart, built-up to a large extent and adorned with many beautiful church buildings.

The castle, although independent in terms of the style of construction, is noteworthy for its vastness; it lies next to the town, fortified by ramparts and surrounded by ponds flowing into the river Uszy, and is only connected with the town by a causeway. The death of the last entailer, Dominik Radziwiłł, in 1813, put an end to the splendour of the town, which, lonely and deserted, retained the only trace of its former importance in its beautiful churches and castle, today only half inhabited and stripped of everything that formerly constituted its wealth and splendour. This is how the greatness of this world passes away!...
