Tiškevičius Palace in Zatroczu - a pearl of neoclassicism in Lithuania

The palace and park complex in Zatroczu is located on the eastern shore of Lake Galvė, a short distance from Trakai. It is an unusual combination of neo-classical architecture and harmonious landscape. The ensemble covers an area of more than 60 hectares, of which 48 hectares is parkland.

History of the Tyszkiewicz Palace

The residence in Zatrocz was erected at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries on the order of Count Józef Tyszkiewicz and Jadwiga Stefania Maria Światopełk-Czetwertyńska. The main designer of the building was the well-known Polish architect and conservationist Józef Huss (1846-1904). The estate remained in the hands of the Tyszkiewicz family until the outbreak of the Second World War.

Unfortunately, after World War II, as a result of confiscation by the Soviet authorities, the estate passed into state hands. The palace, like many other residences of this type, fell into disrepair and gradually lost its former significance. It was devastated and neglected, which affected its technical condition for decades.

Architecture of the palace

The neo-classical edifice with a light-coloured façade is called the "White Palace". One of the most interesting sights here is the neo-classical Tyszkiewicz palace and park complex, located in the surroundings of a picturesque park. This relatively small two-storey building was built on a square plan with an impressive two-column portico facing the lake. The whole was surrounded by an extensive landscape park with English and French gardens. The estate remained in the hands of the Tyszkiewicz family until the outbreak of World War II, when it was confiscated by the Soviet authorities.

The Tyszkiewicz Palace is a relatively small, two-storey building built on a square plan. The main façade, facing the lake, is distinguished by an imposing two-column portico, which adds lightness and classical elegance to the building. The use of neo-classical elements - simplicity of forms, harmonious proportions and rich architectural details - gives the palace a dignified character while blending it into the natural landscape of the surrounding hills and lakes.

The palace is surrounded by an extensive landscape park, designed in the English-French style, another expression of the Tyszkiewicz family's good taste. The park was carefully designed to harmoniously combine elements of nature and architecture. Elegant avenues, natural ponds, carefully trimmed hedges and romantic corners allow visitors to feel the atmosphere of an aristocratic residence from centuries ago.

Renovation

It is only in recent years that the chateau in Zatrocze has regained its former splendour thanks to careful renovation, which has restored the residence to its original appearance. Today, the palace complex serves a cultural and educational function. Numerous exhibitions, concerts and artistic events are held here, including exhibitions by Polish artists such as Leon Wyczółkowski and Wojciech Weiss. In the palace interiors you can also admire restored furniture, which comes from the Podlaskie Museum.

In addition, the palace hosts Chopin concerts, which attract both classical music lovers and tourists from all over the world. Thanks to these initiatives, Zatrocze has again become an important point on the cultural map of Lithuania, and the palace itself attracts not only lovers of architecture and history, but also those who wish to feel the atmosphere of the old times.
