It is said that Mexico is a country friendly towards Poles. What is certain is that there is a strong cult of Pope John Paul II there, and 80 per cent of its inhabitants are Catholic. However, are traces of Polish culture in this country limited solely to the religious sphere? As it turns out, not at all. Below is a list of Polish-related sites in Mexico

• The Santa Rosa settlement – situated 10 km from the town of León de los Aldamas . During the Second World War, in 1943, thanks to the Mexican government, Poles evacuated from the Soviet Union – who had previously been temporarily housed in refugee camps in India and Persia – were taken in here.
• The Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa in Mexico City – is situated in the Lomas de Tecamachalco district. It has become an important place for the Polish community, particularly following the visit to the country by John Paul II in 1979. – both inside and outside the church, one can find statues and other memorials to John Paul II. In 2011, an image of the Merciful Jesus was also placed here.
• The Nicolaus Copernicus monument in Mexico City – is situated in the capital of Mexico, within the building of the former San Agustin monastery . It is the oldest monument to the Polish astronomer in the Americas, having been erected in 1833. It depicts him in a contrapposto pose, his face full of concentration and solemnity. The plinth itself is adorned with the inscription ‘POLONICO’.
• The Paderewski Monument in Mexico City – was created by the Spanish sculptor Miguel Baquidao Campas on the initiative of Colonel Jan Skoryna , who knew the Polish pianist personally and funded the sculpture. Although this took place in 1944, the monument did not appear on the streets of the Mexican capital until 2001.
• The monument to John Paul II at the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City – during his pontificate, the Pope visited this country several times ( he visited Poland more frequently), and he chose this very country as the destination for his first pilgrimage (which he recalled many times later).
