Monument to Stanislaw Moniuszko in Budapest

The balustrade crowning the façade of Budapest's famous opera house, one of the most impressive buildings in the city, includes Stanislaw Moniuszko (1819-1872) among the silhouettes of 16 prominent opera artists. One of the most eminent Polish composers, he is considered the father of Polish opera. The figures that now adorn the edifice are not the original works. In the 1930s, the original sculptures were in very poor condition; one of them even collapsed onto the street. To prevent further dangerous incidents, the decision was taken to dismantle them. New statues were erected during the renovation of the opera house in the 1960s and installed in 1966. The author of the sculpture depicting Moniuszko is Károl Antal.

Made of limestone, the statue shows a full-face representation, with an upright figure. The composer, with his right hand bent at the elbow and held at waist level, is probably holding sheet music. With his left hand he holds up the half of his frock coat. He is dressed in a frock coat, under which a waistcoat is visible, and has a neatly placed foulard under his neck. He is seated on a base on which is engraved the inscription MONIUSZKO filled with gold paint.
