Conservation work on the floor of the Latin Cathedral in Lviv, Ukraine

Information about the object:
The Chapel of the Crucified Jesus in the Latin Cathedral in Lviv The Chapel of the Crucified Jesus in the Latin Cathedral in Lviv is also called Jablonovskis' Chapel after its founder, Anna Jablonovska, née Sapieha. The chapel was built in the second half of the eighteenth century. It is located halfway along the length of the church, on its southern side. In plan it has a shape similar to a rectangle. The outline of the chapel is carved by numerous elements protruding from its walls. These include the plinths of the pilasters, the lower parts of the epitaphs and the staircase leading to the altar located on the longitudinal axis of the chapel, in its southern part. The floor of the altar is elevated by about 45 cm above the floor level of the chapel. The difference in level is overcome by 3 steps surrounding the altar on three sides. The floor of the chapel is elevated by about 15 cm in relation to the floor level of the side aisle, from which it is separated by a single step laid along the entire boundary between the chapel and the south side aisle. The floor of the chapel was mainly made of limestone (most probably of Portland limestone) laid diagonally in a grey-cherry chequered pattern. The exception here is a section of the floor on the elevation below the altar - there it is an orthogonal chequerboard of black and beige slabs. It was additionally supplemented locally with slabs of grey-beige sandstone (probably Trembowel).

Completed works:
The project consisted of conservation and restoration work.

In order to repair this floor, conservation repairs were carried out on the entire floor and stairs in the chapel. Conservation of the floor slabs was carried out; conservation of the stone stair blocks of the entrance stairs; conservation of the stone stair blocks of the altar stairs; repair and conservation of the frame of the crypt exit, repair of the floor.
