Restoration work at the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Bolshovce

Information about the object:
. The aristocratic family of the Jablonovskis strongly influenced the wall and vault design of the church in Bolshovce. The portrayed persons played a significant role internationally and were the founders of many magnificent sacral buildings, such as the Pauline church in Nizhniv, the Jablonowski chapel at the Jasna Gora basilica in Czestochowa, the St. Felix chapel at the Capuchin church in Lvov, the altar of the Lord Jesus the Merciful in the Lvov cathedral and the co-founders of the decoration of the church in Bolshovtsy. They also owned palaces with magnificent gardens, including those in Krzewina, Nizhniów and Płużne.

The preserved 18th century portraits (4 of them) in the church are made in oil and lime technique on lime-sand plasters, they are characterised by numerous mechanical damages - at present they bear the signs of conducted, but not completed conservation works - washing, supplementing the paint layer and plaster.

The decision to conserve the paintings was made because of the great importance of the Jablonowski family in the construction and creation of the church in Bolshovce:

- Stanisław Jablonowski (political writer and poet, grand ensign of the crown, voivode of Volhynia and Ruthenia, grand chancellor of the crown, general of the Ruthenian lands, starosta of Mościce, knight of the (Spanish) Order of the Golden Fleece);

- Joanna née Bethune Jabłonowska (daughter of Marquis François de Bethune and Louise Marie d'Arquien sister of Queen Marie Kazimiera, wife of Chancellor Jan Stanisław Jabłonowski);

- Stanisław Wincenty Jabłonowski (writer and poet, duke of Ostróg, Bułszów, Niżniów, Krzewina, Płużne, Voivode of Rawski, starosta of Świecie, Międzyrzecki, Białocerkiewski)

- and a figure, the first from the top, now completely illegible (conservation work and historical-artistic research will perhaps help to read the person portrayed), located on the wall of the pillar separating the chapel in the first bay from the west, on the north side.

Completed works:
As part of the project, conservation work was carried out on a wall painting of the Jablonowski family of the Prussian coat of arms III. It depicts four portraits of the Jablonowski family, including Stanislaw Jablonski, Joanna of Bethune Jablonowska, Stanislaw Wincenty Jablonowski (and another figure, which remains completely illegible). They are located on the wall of the pillar separating the chapel in the first bay from the west, on the north side, in the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Bolshovce, Ukraine.

The work was both technical in nature - repairing the paint and plaster layer, fixing fragments of the painting which had fallen off, and aesthetic - retouching and reconstruction. The work also involved protecting the objects from progressive degradation, disinfecting and restoring their original artistic qualities. These treatments will aim to honour their memory and spread information about the history of the church and the Jablonowski family. The scope of work covered approximately 70% of the paintings.
