Cleaning and maintenance work on Polish graves at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Moston, UK

Site information:
The 'old' section at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Moston contains more than a hundred Polish graves, which until 2016 had been forgotten for more than 30 years. Most of the Poles resting there are soldiers, Polish veterans who were able to survive the war and live out their days. Meritorious to their Homeland, they include the Knights of the Polish Victory, Home Army soldiers, Legionaries, pilots, soldiers of the 2nd Corps, General Maczek, General Sosabowski, Siberians and Kresowiak, a chaplain of the Warsaw Uprising, scouts, political activists and many others. Many of these gravestones have not stood the test of time or have been devastated by vandals and by branches falling from tall trees.

Completed works:
The project involved carrying out cleaning work, minor repair work, as well as restoration of the earthen graves located in the cemetery. The project was carried out with the help of Polish volunteers from the UK, including Polish young people from Polish organisations, including scouts, in Huddersfield and Manchester. A total of 16 volunteers took part.

Funding: Polonica Institute programme "Polish cultural heritage abroad - volunteering".
