Renovation and conservation of the Polish Armenian tombstone in the cemetery in Banilovo ( Western Ukraine).

Information about the object:
The cemetery in Baniłów is a particularly important place on the map of preserved complexes of small church cemeteries in the former Borderlands of the Second Polish Republic. It is one of the few such well-preserved cemeteries belonging exclusively to the heritage of Polish Armenians. The preserved tombstones are a testimony to the activity of excellent carving and stonemasonry workshops from Western Ukraine and Pokuttya - from Chernivtsi, Kolomyia, Lviv and Stanislaviv.

The gravestone monument of an unidentified person selected for conservation stands out for its artistic qualities, noticeable despite the object's poor state of preservation. In the lower part of the monument, the decoration in neo-Gothic style has been preserved.

Completed works:

2022 (stage II)
The works took place in Banilovo, which used to be one of the most important centres of Armenian settlement in Bukovina.

The works constituted phase II of the work undertaken in 2019. The dismantling of the entire tombstone, the gluing together of the broken elements of the pedestal, and the reassembly with horizontal insulation were carried out. Construction work had to be carried out on the foundation to level and stabilise it. Cleaning of the object was carried out, and defects in the form and surface layer were filled in with stone flecks or a suitable mineral compound.

2023 (phase II)
In 2023, the second stage of conservation work will be carried out on the NN tombstone from the Banilovo cemetery, undertaken in 2019. It is planned to dismantle the monument, disinfect and clean the stone from build-up, glue the broken elements with resin using stainless steel rods and brackets, perform horizontal insulation with lead tiles, reassemble the pedestal, and return the statue to its original location. The restorations of the damaged form will be filled with a mineral mass imitating stone, while larger cavities will be grouted.

Funding: Programme of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage "Protection of Cultural Heritage Abroad".
