Survey of Polish cemeteries and graves in the USA

Unlike cemeteries in Ukraine, Polish graves in the USA do not form homogeneous burial areas, but are located in vast multinational necropolises. Sometimes they are concentrated within single plots.

The pretext for the recognition was information about the graves of soldiers from Haller's Army, who came from the United States and volunteered in 1917 for the Polish army that was being formed in France and later returned home. The 59 headstones, typical of American cemeteries, in the form of small stone slabs placed horizontally in the lawn, are located in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery near Orchard Lake (Michigan). They were found here for a reason. In this small town near Detroit, there has been a Polish Seminary since 1909, around which the secular circles of the Polish community were also centred. In addition to the graves of Hallerians, the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery contains the graves of professors of this seminary and representatives of women religious orders who ministered in Polish parishes in the USA.

The report on this cemetery was extended by the UKSW researchers to include several other necropolises near Detroit, where not only Polish exiles but also the priests and nuns who cared for them rested.
