Sara Lipska - monograph on life and work

The first ever monograph on the life and work of the Polish painter, sculptor and designer Sara Lipska has been published in the scientific series 'Studies and Materials' of the Polonica Institute in co-edition with the National Museum in Warsaw. The author of the work is Dr Ewa Ziembińska, a graduate of the Institute of Art History at the University of Warsaw, curator of the Sculpture Collection of the National Museum in Warsaw and curator of the Museum of Sculpture in Królikarnia (a branch of the MNW).

The story of Sara Lipska, although it begins in Mława (the artist's birthplace), takes place mainly in Paris - the city of dreams, the capital of art, the seat of inspiration and innovation, the legend of bohemia, the Mecca of artists. The metropolis, which is the centre and capital of the art world, was an obligatory point in the biography of almost every artist. This is also confirmed by Lipska's biography, meticulously reconstructed on the basis of mainly French archival sources, letters and memoirs. Most importantly, it is presented against the background of the Jewish milieu from which the artist came, in the context of the social situation of women artists and in the reality of Paris at the time, including the Polish diaspora. Sara Lipska's biography provides evidence of the artist's affiliation with the Parisian bohemia, the world of ballet and theatre, but also her connections with the business of the time. In addition to the exhibitions she participated in or her collaboration with Russian ballets and with Leon Bakst's company, she is known to have owned boutiques with her own creations on the Champs-Élysées in Paris and in Monte Carlo.

"Sara Lipska was an enterprising and precisely versatile artist, but, as the text shows, she did not seek fame and notoriety, and always placed her achievements in the shadow of her master Xawery Dunikowski. The lack of significant reviews of her achievements written by her contemporaries meant that she was quickly forgotten. In the last two decades, she slowly began to make a comeback, mainly due to her interest in figures from the so-called 'big world' - Antoine (Antoni Cierplikowski) and Helena Rubinstein. Increasingly, her name began to appear alongside Dunikowski. Nevertheless, it is only Ewa Ziembińska's book that will restore Sara Lipska to her rightful place in the history of art," emphasises Professor Joanna Sosnowska in her review of the book.

Polish female artists are returning to the stage of public life, taking their rightful place in the pages of the history of art and culture. Sara Lipska's name appeared in the halls of the Musée Du Luxembourg in Paris, where the exhibition 'Pionnières. Artistes dans le Paris des années folles'. The artist stands in the limelight on a par with Olga Boznańska, Anna Bilińska Bogdanowicz, Tamara Lempicka (Tamara de Lempicka) or Mela Muter.

The publication of the Polonica Institute and the National Museum in Warsaw "Sara Lipska. Versatile Artist' by Ewa Ziembińska will be published in the scientific publishing series 'Studies and Materials' at the end of 2022. This item will expand the range of publishing projects focusing on researching and documenting Polish cultural heritage abroad.
