Biography:

Stanislaw Reszka, also known by his Latin pseudonym Rescius (an anagram of Sanis recta salus), was born on 14 September 1544 in Buk into a wealthy bourgeois family. He received his first education in his hometown, then continued his studies at the Collegium Lubranscianum in Poznan, Frankfurt on the Oder, Wittenberg and Leipzig, and finally obtained a doctorate in both laws at the University of Perugia. Already at the age of fifteen, he became secretary to Bishop Stanislaus Hosius, which launched his career both in ecclesiastical structures and at the royal court. In 1571 he assumed the Warmian canonry, two years later he became royal secretary, and in 1583 dean of the Warsaw chapter. In 1585 he accepted the abbey of Jędrzejów in commendam and obtained the office of apostolic protonotary.

As a trained humanist and keen erudite, he wrote mainly in Latin - compiling polemical works, editing a collection of his protector's writings, and keeping personal records ("Diarium" from 1583-1589). In 1588 he was accredited to the Holy See as a representative of the Commonwealth, and from 1592 he resided in Naples in the role of special envoy, including on the legacy of Queen Bona. In Buk he founded and financed the Holy Spirit Hospital, the only brick healing facility in the town, comprising twelve rooms and an extensive kitchen. He died on 3 April 1600 in Naples, where Pope Clement VIII had a marble monument erected to him; in his native Buk, his name survives in the name of the square adjacent to the now defunct hospital.
