Plaque commemorating Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński on Lucky Island

Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński came to his island of happiness twice - in 1937 and 1938. It was here that he first fell in love with Hanka Grotowska, and a year later with a girl from Lviv - Zuzanna Progulska. It was in a letter to her that he wrote that they had found their "Island of Happiness", he also wrote poems and painted watercolours. After the summer holidays, he sent his beloved probably the first of his manuscript volumes, "Islands of Happiness", and later still ",Selected Poems", together with a letter-dedication. This love, although they met once more on skis in February 1939, did not last. However, frozen beneath his eyelids, views of Dalmatia, especially of its island of happy Šolta, would recur in his war poems such as 'Recollection' from 1941.

A country, a country seen through a green glass.
Grey donkeys flow like tears along the overgrown bottom of the memory.
These landscapes, before they fall, hang on their lashes and tremble.
Grey donkeys flow like tears - the overgrown bottom of a memory.
Miniature houses, far away by all the air,
by a taboon of days and clouds, far away by someone's death.
Donkeys flow through me the overgrown bottom of memories
and grow in me years like black, randy fur.

Anyway, Susanna Progulska also remembered the island well: "a lovely piece of land as if from a fairy tale. Slightly mountainous, covered partly with cypress forest and partly with vineyards'.

The watercolours Baczyński painted on the island and one of his letters he sent to his parents - describing life on Šolta - have also been preserved:

Rodžice!
Today I am already here for the second day. Yesterday we visited Split. And then we came to Šolta. It is very nice and very hot here. And today, even though it is not even sunny and there is a light wind from the sea, you can fry. We had a bath yesterday. The water is so very salty that when you lick yourself after bathing, you feel like you are licking pure salt. Also, this water is thick and it is much easier to learn to swim in it. You wanted me to write to you about how to eat and, sleep here and just the opposite. So the food is not bad, i.e. good, but not very tasty. I eat mostly everything in two portions because I am constantly hungry. Also, like last year, where I sit I fall asleep. I sleep "behind the grille" so that the "flies don't come in", but it doesn't help at all, because they stand in a queue at the door and just wait for someone to open the door. We commit numerous fly murders (fly swatters as created for Tita). We go to bed early so that we can get up early (We fall asleep around nine at the latest).

Mr Bartelmus says I'll learn to swim soon, but we'll see. Among the more interesting things to mention are the (puppy's) cries (What's going on with Niun?) (Does he miss his Lordship?).

In 2015, on the initiative of Barbara Figurniak and Mateusz Jarosz, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland and the Polish Cultural Association "Polonez" funded a plaque placed on a boulder opposite the house where the collages took place, which recalls Baczynski's presence on the island with an inscription in Polish and Croatian
