Biography:

Wanda Antonina Zawistowska (c. 1874-1904), also known as Wanda de Malex (distorted "de Nałęcz"), born in Kraków, daughter of Lucjan Zawistowski, actress and writer. She made her debut in 1891 at the Promenada garden theatre in Warsaw. She appeared in various provincial ensembles, and in 1894 played in the Warsaw garden theatre on Czyste Street, where, among other roles, she played the role of the Maid in the play Nad przepaścią [Over the Precipice]. During the 1896/97 season, she appeared in the Poznań theatre, and from the 1897/98 season, in the Lviv theatre.

In 1902 she received a scholarship from the Galician State Department, thanks to which she left for France to study singing. After two years in Paris, she committed suicide due to unhappy love.

She died at her place of residence (avenue Wagram 87). She was buried on 8 February 1904, registered under the annual number 2664 in concession no. 35995. The death was reported in the 17th arrondissement of Paris (AdP AD Paris 17e no. 335 of 1904).

The "Kuryer Codzienny" (Warsaw, R. 40, no. 47, 1904, p. 4) published an account of Wanda Zawistowska's funeral:

"On 12 February. On 8 b. m., at 10 o'clock in the morning, the funeral of the late Wanda Nałęcz-Zawistowska, former Lviv theatre artist and translator of many works of French, Italian and English literature, took place. After Mass, celebrated in the church of St. François de Sales , the funeral procession set off towards the Père-Lachaise cemetery, where the deceased's professor, Andrew Gedalge , offered the body hospitality in the family tomb of her in-laws d'Obigny de Ferriéres . The coffin was followed by the ladies Debussy , Chausson (wife of the late composer Ernest Chausson ), Wanda Landowska , pp.Paul Dukas and Gedalge , professors of the late, Peter Lalo and Poujand (music critics), Debussy (author of (Pelléas and Mélisande), painter Domingo Motta and several young composers, Robert Brussel , Levallois and others. The late Wanda Nałęcz arrived in Paris a year ago for her studies, in singing, and found in the person of Andrew Gedalge and Paul Dukas not only disinterested professors, but devoted and noble mentors. Under their guidance, the young singer's carera began to show great promise. Messager vowed to engage her after a year of study at the Comic Opera. Maeterlinck and Debussy saw in her the future ideal "Melisande". Young, only 24 years old, of uncommon beauty, with exceptional stage conditions and a beautiful, though undeveloped voice, she had all the necessary data to become in a short time the pride of the first-class European stage. The small stipend from the National Department she received before her departure was barely enough to pay for her flat. She earned a modest living as a hard-working journalist, as a correspondent for the "Kuryer Poranny" and for several weekly magazines, and also as a translator of mostly dramatic works (for the Lviv and Krakow stages), often spending sleepless nights at her desk. Exhaustion from work and exhaustion after typhoid fever accelerated the heart disease, to which the deceased was always prone. On her return from Vienna early last December, she moved to Avenue Wagram and died here. She had the kind of death she dreamed of, calm, serene and bright. She died as she wished, amidst flowers, which a few friends threw around the room. Her coffin was followed by people for whom she had the highest adoration. B. L.".
