A visit to the Cierlický žvirkovice

A short note describing a trip to the so-called Zvirkovisko located in Čierlick. The author describes the neglect of the chapel located in the park (Source: "Dziennik Polski", Český Těšín 1936, R: 3, no. 85, p. 376, after: Silesian Digital Library).

A modernised reading of the text

Čierlicko (Żwirkowisko)

I was at Żwirkowisko yesterday. It was with emotion that I entered the pinewood, lovely today in its spring robe of fresh green, bathed in the May sunshine. No one would have guessed, unaware of things, that in this cheerful little wood, in such a charming place, a disaster so painful to the heart of every Pole had occurred. After walking a few steps along the forest path, I saw Żwirkowisko.

What a lovely miniature park. How beautifully the Polish people knew how to commemorate this place. No wonder, as it was Żwirki and Wigury, the winged knights of Poland, taking off to eternity. With emotion in my heart, my head uncovered, as on the site of sacred national mementos, I walked towards the proudly towering mausoleum, which wished to commemorate, and in beautiful form, the memory of two Polish heroes.

I stood at the closed door to look inside, expecting to see there some new traces of the tragedy that had taken place here. But oh, what a pity I did so, it was better to stay away and admire everything from the outside and quietly contemplate in a corner of the forest somewhere. The interior of the chapel was full of dirt, no one had made any effort to wash away the traces of mud brought there on their shoes during some distant ceremony. On the step in front of the plaque unburnt candles, on the left a reflected tile plaque at the bottom of a stone pillar.

I was saddened to see this lack of respect and remembrance for this place. I hung my head gloomily and walked away, a feeling of shame in my soul.
