Biography:

Władysław Jaszczołt (1883-1962), born in Brest-on-the-Bug, son of Bolesław, a Russian naval engineer, and Helena Prus-Kostecka, a pianist. He began studying natural sciences at the University of Warsaw, from which he was expelled due to his participation in the 1905 school strike. He continued his studies at the Jagiellonian University, but finally graduated in law at Moscow University in 1911. After graduating, he settled in Vilnius, where he worked in a lawyer's office and was involved in pro-independence and educational activities. He was a co-founder of the Society for the Defence of the Eastern Borderlands. In 1917, he began his career as a prosecutor, first in Siedlce and then in Warsaw. He fought as a volunteer in the Polish-Bolshevik war.From 1922, he was head of the Security Department at the Ministry of the Interior, and from 1924, director of the department. In 1926-1933, he was appointed Voivode of Łódź, in 1933-1935 of Vilnius, and then Minister of Social Welfare in 1935-1936. In 1941, he was arrested by the NKVD and deported to the camps. After his release, he joined the Anders Army, and with it to Persia and Lebanon, where he organised help for civilians leaving the USSR and became involved in legal life there. In 1947, he went to London and became a member of the Polish Independence League. In exile, he continued his independence and educational activities.
