Cemetery in Bohdanov (Багданаў)

A grave field near Bohdanov with Polish grave monuments. An inventory documentation was made for the cemetery (stored in the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage). Information about the cemetery has been published (see bibliography).

There are two cemeteries in Bohdanov. According to Anna Lewkowska, Jacek Lewkowski and Wojciech Walczak: "The Ruszczyc family court cemetery is located on the top of a hill (...), 200 m north of the village buildings and 20 m east of the Catholic cemetery. (...) The cemetery is square in plan and covers an area of 320 m2. It is fenced with metal linked chains. (...) The cemetery is well-kept and overgrown with grass". It was established in the first half of the 19th century, and 13 tombstones from that century remain. Among the oldest are the tombstones of Jordan Ruszczyc from 1841 and Ferdynand Ruszczyc from 1949. The latter "is a high granite obelisk on a pedestal with a concave top, crowned with a cast iron crucifix on a ball-shaped base. The planes of the obelisk's walls are polished, surrounded by a deeply engraved textural border. On the front wall, in its central part, a deeply engraved inscription". This inscription reads: 'D. O. M. / FERDINAND RUSZCZYC / UM. YEAR 1848 / SEPTEMBER 16 / LIVED FOR 52 YEARS". The same name was given to a Polish painter buried in the cemetery in 1936. The inscription reads: 'FERDYNAND RUSZCZYC / ARTYSTA PAINTER PROFESSOR / USB WILNIE 1870-1936 / REGINA Z RAUCHÓW / RUSZCZYCOWA 1892-1939 / NIECH ODPOCZYWA W POKOJU'. Among the gravestones from the 19th century, two have an inscription in Russian.

The second cemetery is the Catholic cemetery. According to the cited researchers, "it is located outside the village (...) It was established on the plan of an irregular polygon, without internal division. It consists of two parts, the old one, fenced in from the east and south with a stone wall, and the new one, fenced in with a wooden fence, The whole occupies an area of 9.35 ha. The cemetery was established in the middle of the 19th century. (...) The area of the cemetery is covered with a pine forest. State of preservation good" The oldest gravestone belongs to Franciszek Pilecki (d. 1866) and has the form of a flat iron cross with a decorative frame and Christ at the intersection of the arms. The inscription reads: "D. O. M. / FRANCISZEK PILECKI / LIVED 80 YEARS / DIED 4 OCTOBRE 1866. / ASKS PASSERS-BY FOR AN ANGELIC GREETING". Noteworthy is also the inscription: "Here lie the remains of the late P. / JGNACY AMIŁAWSKI / LIVED 32 YEARS DIED FROM THIS WORLD / 1873 R. / APRIL 28 D. / MOURNFUL FATHER DEDICATES THIS MEMORIAL / PASSERS-BY ASK / FOR 3 HAIL MARY'S". In the cemetery, however, most of the gravestones are contemporary .
