Cemetery in Derechin

Cemetery with Polish gravestone monuments. Information about the cemetery has been published (see bibliography). According to Lewkowski and Walczak: "The active Catholic cemetery is located in the eastern part of Dereczyn, (...), it is situated on a flat terrain, surrounded by meadows, has no fence and occupies the area of 0.5 ha. It is established on a rectangular plan, without division into plots and alleys. (...) The cemetery is overgrown with dense bushes, and for this reason it is difficult to access mainly the northern side of the cemetery, a sparse stand of trees can be found in the eastern part." The cemetery was established in the first half of the 20th century. The oldest gravestone belongs to General Hamper (Gampier), commanding the 20th Regiment of Smolensk Dragoons. After the cited authors: "The tombstone is very interesting in form. It is a horizontally laid marble epitaph plaque on a stone mound of pebbles. The rectangular plaque is surrounded by a profiled frame with eyelets. On the axis of the plaque at the top and bottom oval cabochons, framed by a rich elaborate volute and ribbon ornament. The inscription is in Cyrillic script. The form of the tombstone is reminiscent of epitaph plaques found in the interiors of churches." The inscription reads: "NAGROBNAJA / YEVO PRJEWOOHOBITJELSTWA GNRAŁ / MAJOR AND KAWALJERU GAMPIERU / BYWSZEM SZEF SMOLJEN. 20 DRAGUN 20 / POŁKA 25 NOJABRJA / 1814 GODA / DIERJECZIN / NIE PISZI MO(JEJ) LJUBOW MONUMENT TWOJ / POCZI WIELKIJ (...) Z BEZSMJERTIE S TOBOJ". Apart from that, only a dozen or so gravestones date from the 19th century, the rest are contemporary, with the majority of gravestones from the 1st half of the 20th century.
